A Blog on the Corner of Technology and Society
I have to tell you about my new favorite blog, 606Tech.com. 606Tech.com is written by Jay Fortner and Kristen Nicole of Chicago, Illinois. 606Tech.com gets its name from the first three digits of Chicago area zip codes (e.g 60601). Although relatively new, Kristen and Jay launched 606Tech.com only about six months ago, the blog has already profiled more than 200 companies from across the country. Their first post was about MTV’s Virtual Hills and Laguna Beach. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Kristen and I have become a devoted fan of her blog.
There are many blogs that cover emerging technologies, innovation and startups. But Kristen and Jay are taking a unique approach by covering technology specifically from its impact on society. That’s cool. Because as much as I love to dive deep into technology and how things work, it’s what technology does for people that makes it so fascinating to me.
I don’t know how they find all these cool emerging companies profiled on 606Tech.com, but I wish I did, because a great many of them would make perfect clients for MoPR (and since we’ve gotten to know Kristen, she has profiled MoPR clients ConnectMe Mobile and Hovr, and had previously profiled Citizen Image). If I had to recommend a list of publications for venture capitalists to read to see the newest up-and-comers in high-tech, 606Tech.com would surely be on that list.
Kristen posts news articles and her interviews with founders of new companies with new technologies, giving the executive full reign to discuss the profiled company. Kristen’s questions keep these profiles germane and interesting for not only the tech geek crowd (e.g. me), but also for a broad spectrum of people who are interested on where society is going, and not just how technology will take it there.
Unlike most typical blogs, and even the really great blogs like GigaOM and TechCrunch, 606Tech.com offers visitors different features. With tabs across the top of the website, visitors not only get to read in-depth interviews and reporting, but can also see companies’ “video pitches” and companies are invited to post their press releases.
For the purpose of full disclosure, I should explain how I “discovered” 606Tech.com and how I came to know Kristen Nicole (a person so nice, they named her twice). It’s a very high compliment when someone from the media recommends you to a prospective client. It’s a higher compliment still when you’ve not had the chance to interact with a person before you receive her recommendation. This is how I met Kristen. Even though she and I – or anyone else at MoPR for that matter – had not had the chance to ever meet, speak or exchange emails, she recommended MoPR to a prospect (a really cool prospect at that!).
As soon as I learned the name of the reporter who gave us the referral I sent her a thank you note. And in the weeks that have followed, we’ve become friends. Remember, the “R” in PR stands for “relations,” and making friends across the industry is one the aspects of this job I love the most.
